First entire day of rain in Beijing memory yesterday. Lots of minor flooding in places, but at least it purges the mugginess from the air.

Had a group of Go friends round the apartment on Saturday (permission was sought from Zhouzhou a month in advance!), we generally rotate amongst us for who’s turn it is to host (which normally just means paying the bill at the restaurant). Very enjoyable afternoon, interesting on the timing note was that I told folks to arrive any time after 12:00, and the first to come was at 14:30. Didn’t need to make my shower…

Just back in from a dander to the shops with Arthur; he gets quite insecure in new spaces with lots of people around and flaps around my legs until I put him up on my shoulders.

Yesterday at 19:00 we had a rather sharp knock on the door: the man who lives in the apartment just below us was somewhat peeved by the noise generated from Arthur’s inter-room shuttle running. He wasn’t particularly friendly in his tone, but I of course apologised and explained that we would do our best to restrain him, I thanked him for communicating with us. Unfortunately there was a return visit just after 20:00, were he explained how he’d just moved in and was a little on edge (his words: 神经衰弱). The second time Zhouzhou answered the door; after a continued…

Beautiful weather last few days after muggy patch. Noticeable how sleepy everyone gets in the summer on the hot days without any sunlight, especially seeing as we’re normally spoilt for the latter. Sunglasses now on for the Sunday run and a new level of pleasure upon rehydrating with fruit juice at the end of it. Decided to get the bus home so that I could make the most of the blue skies. There’s a photo below from the bus of a clear area beside the door staying don’t stand here (and signs on the sides saying not to lean on…

The cool breeze when leaving the apartment in the morning at 5:45 is now gone, displaced by all-day stewing heat. Run yesterday morning was particularly challenging in the overcast muggy heat. Terrific cacophony of air activity when sitting outside for my post-run coffee, my first reaction being “it’s all started”- WWIII, but then it goes quiet and I can smirk off my neurotic confabulations. Reminds me of my fear when I was younger that the sun had exploded when I would hear rumbling in the sky. Of course the radiation would have already wiped us out before the sound arrived…

*Written last Sunday but only getting out now due to photo issues!*

After arriving at the Apple store last week 5 minutes in advance for my booked appointment I had to wait an additional 15 minutes beyond the scheduled time. 5 minutes later was diagnosed that my pad had a hardware issue and they needed to order me a replacement. Had contact with about 6 or 7 members of staff in total over the course of the 2 visits, and not one proactively spoke or greeted me in Chinese (this is in contrast to when I’m in Japan when most…

Ipad locked me out of my email as of Tuesday, with various other accounts and most apps refusing to open. After further issues, attempted a reformat yesterday but hasn’t solved the problem, so booked in with the “experts” at the apple store again. Amused by the fact I have to supply my passport number, supply details of my device and can only go in at a specific time; more complicated that a hospital visit (but probably fewer backhanders involved).

Arthur had a delightful 2nd birthday on Thursday with fizzy grape juice and ice-cream cake. Somewhat confused and concerned when we…

Had to take the morning off school last Thursday to sort the receipts for apartment so that I could get a rebate from the school. The whole receipt thing is amusing in itself, as I have to spend nearly 300quid each year to get the receipts, also, this a legitimate process that is done in a scruffy little seemingly illegitimate office ran by 3 causally attired people near were I live. I arrive at 9:00am when they opened up, only to find there was already a queue of 7 people. …

With last Saturday in the office Sunday was again a one-day weekend so no typing time amidst bread-making, running, lunchtime nap, dinner and other domestic faffage!

Nana Miao had been unwell last week and a bit with some skin irritation and decided to head to the hospital to get it checked up. White-blood cell count was up and the doctor informed her there were tests that could be done in the hospital for 9000 yuan, but.. he a mate who could the tests for 6000 yuan and gave her a phone number to contact him. Nana was dubious and took…
